Train to Gain

Train to Gain is a programme funded by the Skills Funding Agency to encourage employers to give their low-skilled employees time off work to achieve the equivalent of a Level 2 vocational qualification or an equivalent basic skills qualification.

Eligibility

The following employees are eligible for full funding under Train to Gain:

  • employees without a level 2 qualification* to achieve an NVQ Level 2 or 3 as appropriate
  • employees aged 19 - 25 to achieve a first NVQ Level 3 qualification

For small and medium sized businesses (less than 250 full-time staff) fully funded Level 2 qualifications and subsidised Level 3 qualifications are available for employees regardless of whether the employee has a qualification at this level.

Employees must also meet Skills Funding Agency residency requirements and have a contract of employment.  Volunteers, self-employed people and people working for an employment agency are also eligible.

* A level 2 qualification = an NVQ Level 2 or four GCSEs at Grade C and above

Training

A flexible training programme will be agreed with each employer designed to meet their needs and the needs of their employees. Employees working towards an NVQ will be assessed in the workplace carrying out their normal day to day duties. Training and portfolio building to support the NVQ can be offered as a combination of short courses, one-to-one or group sessions as appropriate. Employees taking part in the programme should aim to complete their qualification in a maximum of a year.

The training is not only free but employers with 1-49 staff may be eligible to receive financial compensation for releasing employees to attend training for up to a maximum of 70 hours over a one year period.
