More and more garages are recognising the importance of training their staff. Training helps businesses become more competitive and improves its image and profitability. Training also improves the motivation of staff and reduces staff turnover.

Training for motor vehicle apprentices is delivered in a partnership between employers and Quest. Training sessions take place at Beckton Activities Centre


Intermediate Apprenticeships in Motor Vehicle

Motor vehicle intermediate apprenticeships are aimed at school and college leavers and people new to the trade.   Apprenticeships lead to a Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence, a Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles, Key Skills in maths, English and IT at

Level 1, a City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Knowledge of Employee Rights and Responsibilities and the development of Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). There is no set time to complete an intermediate apprenticeship but, depending on the young person's work activities, experience and motivation, the time taken can be anything from 18 to 24 months.

Young people and adults on an intermediate apprenticeship work towards the following motor vehicle qualifications:

Level  2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Competenceair Competence


The Level 2 Diploma is a practical qualification aimed at anyone developing a career in the motor industry.  Assessment for the qualification takes place in the workplace and is based on activities carried out by the apprentice as part of their working day.  To prove their competence, the apprentice builds a portfolio using evidence collected from their everyday work.  Evidence includes job cards, observations of their performance while carrying out tasks, witness testimonies from their employer or other members of staff and answers to questions asked by their assessor.

Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles

This qualification is aimed at people wanting to develop some of the key skills and understanding in motor vehicle systems.  It is a theory-based qualification designed to be delivered away from the workplace.  The Diploma includes the knowledge required for routine vehicle maintenance, replacing vehicle electrical units and components, overhauling vehicle transmission, steering and suspension units and inspecting vehicles using prescribed methods.

Advanced Apprenticeships in Motor Vehicle

Advanced apprenticeships are aimed at more experienced young people and adults up and a Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence, a Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles, Key Skills in maths, English and IT at Level 2, a City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Knowledge of Employee Rights and Responsibilities and the development of Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS).   The time taken to achieve the advanced apprenticeship varies between nine to 15 months depending on the person's experience, opportunities to undertake more advanced work in their garage and their motivation and ability.

Young people and adults on an advanced apprenticeship work towards the following motor vehicle qualifications:

Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Competence

The Level 3 Diploma is aimed at people with experience in the industry and includes diagnosis and repair of system faults on light or heavy vehicles. Apprentices are assessed and build a portfolio in the same way as the Level 2 Diploma.

Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles

This qualification is aimed at people wanting to broaden their understanding of motor vehicle systems.  It also gives them the opportunity to learn how to develop others.  The diploma includes the knowledge required to diagnose faults in engines, chassis systems, transmissions and drivelines and auxiliary electrical systems.

Motor vehicle taster days 

Quest offers a series of motor vehicle taster days for young people aged 16 - 18 who are interested in an apprenticeship in motor vehicle. The day gives young people an opportunity to find out more about working in the motor industry. They will meet the motor vehicle training team who will be happy to answer any questions the young people have.
