Motor Vehicle

More and more garages are recognising the importance of training their staff. Training helps businesses become more competitive and improves its image and profitability. Training also improves the motivation of staff and reduces staff turnover.

Training for motor vehicle apprentices is delivered in a partnership between employers and Quest.  All training sessions take place at Quest's premises in Ilford.  Currently 81% of Quest's apprentices achieve their full framework, well above the national average of 50%.

Quest delivers apprenticeships in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and Mechanical, Electrical and Trim Technician (MET/Body Fitting).

Motor vehicle apprenticeships are aimed at school and college leavers and lead to an NVQ Level 2, key skills and a technical certificate at Level 2. There is no set time to complete an apprenticeship but, depending on the young person's work activities, experience and motivation, the time taken can be anything from 18 to 24 months.

Young people on an apprenticeship work towards the following qualifications:

Vehicle Maintenance & Repair

  •  C&G  NVQ Level 2 in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
  •  C&G Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Level 2
  •  C&G key skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology Level 1

MET/Body Fitting

  •  C&G  NVQ Level 2 in MET/Body Fitting
  •  C&G Certificate in Vehicle Body & Paint Level 2
  •  C&G key skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology Level 1

Advanced Apprenticeships in Motor Vehicle

Advanced apprenticeships are aimed at more experienced young people up to the age of 25 and lead to an NVQ Level 3, key skills at a higher level and a technical certificate at Level 3.  The time taken to achieve the advanced apprenticeship varies depending on the young person's experience, opportunities to undertake more advanced work in their garage and their motivation and ability.

NVQ Level 2 in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair or MET/Body Repair

The Level 2 NVQ is aimed at school leavers or people working in a garage for the first time.  Assessment for the NVQ takes place in the workplace and is based on activities carried out by the apprentice as part of their working day.  To prove their competence, the apprentice builds a portfolio using evidence collected from their everyday work.  Evidence includes job cards, observations of their performance while carrying out tasks, witness testimonies from their employer or other members of staff and answers to questions asked by their assessor.

NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair

The NVQ Level 3 is aimed at people with experience in the industry and includes diagnosis and repair of system faults on light or heavy vehicles. Apprentices are assessed and build a portfolio in the same way as a Level 2 NVQ.

VRQ Level 1 in Maintenance & Repair

The VRQ Level 1 covers a range of practical skills including maintenance, health and safety, an introduction to vehicle technology and workshops methods and processes. It is aimed at young people not yet ready for an apprenticeship programme who have a real interest in working in the motor vehicle industry.

Free IT Training and Short Courses
All young people working towards an NVQ with Quest are offered the opportunity to attend Quest's commercial IT Training and other Short Courses free of charge.
